The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed smartphone manufacturers to preload the government-developed Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices. This move aims to combat rising cyber threats and protect consumers from fraud. The directive, issued on November 28, 2025, requires compliance within 90 days, targeting devices entering the market by March 2026.

Sanchar Saathi empowers users to report spam calls, verify mobile connections, and block fraudulent messages. It also enables tracking of lost or stolen phones and promotes safe digital practices through alerts. DoT officials emphasize that this initiative strengthens national cybersecurity amid increasing online scams affecting millions.

Major brands, including Apple and Samsung, must implement the app on new models and push updates to devices in the supply chain. However Apple plans to resist the order, citing concerns over user privacy and device security. The company intends to discuss the mandate with government authorities to address these issues.

In response to backlash from privacy advocates and opposition parties, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified today that the app remains optional. Users can delete it if they choose, emphasizing individual control over device content. This statement addresses fears of surveillance and data collection without consent.

The policy reflects India's push for digital safety in one of the world's largest smartphone markets. Industry stakeholders continue to seek further guidance on implementation to balance security with user rights.
