The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) today confirms that William Troost-Ekong, captain of the Super Eagles, has officially retired from international football. The announcement marks the end of a distinguished decade-long career in which Troost-Ekong earned 83 senior caps, represented Nigeria in five major tournaments, and secured three medals.
Troost-Ekong, born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother, made his international debut in 2015 after receiving a life-changing call from the late coach Stephen Keshi. Over the years, he became affectionately known as the “Oyibo Wall” and later “Skippo”, reflecting his commanding presence in defense and his leadership as captain.
In his farewell message, Troost-Ekong expressed deep gratitude: “HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will.”
The NFF President praised Troost-Ekong’s contributions: “William Troost-Ekong has been a pillar of Nigerian football. His dedication, leadership, and passion for the Super Eagles will forever be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy that future generations will aspire to emulate.”
Troost-Ekong’s retirement comes just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a tournament where his absence will be deeply felt. While stepping away from international duty, he remains committed to supporting Nigerian football and inspiring young talents across the nation.
