Thailand Reaffirms Commitment to Defend Borders Amid International Calls for Peace

The Government of Thailand today declared its unwavering resolve to continue military operations against Cambodian incursions, directly countering a ceasefire announcement made by United States President Donald Trump.

In a statement issued from the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that no agreement had been reached with Cambodia despite Trump's claims. "Thailand will not yield to external pressures while our sovereignty remains under threat," Charnvirakul stated. "Our forces actively protect our territory from ongoing aggressions, and we stand ready to respond decisively."

The announcement follows Trump's declaration on December 12, 2025, where he asserted that both nations had agreed to a ceasefire after separate phone discussions with Thai and Cambodian leaders. Trump tied the purported deal to enhanced trade relations and U.S. support. However, Thai officials swiftly denied any such pact, citing recent border clashes that have escalated since a landmine incident in November.

Fighting along the disputed 500-mile border has intensified, with reports of artillery exchanges and air strikes causing civilian displacements and casualties on both sides.

The conflict centers on historical claims, including the Preah Vihear temple area, which has strained relations for decades.

International observers, including ASEAN Chair Malaysia, have called for immediate de-escalation. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged dialogue, warning that prolonged hostilities could destabilize the region.

Thailand invites global partners to recognize the facts on the ground and support peaceful resolutions based on international law. The government remains open to negotiations but insists on Cambodia's withdrawal from contested zones.
