The Department of State Services (DSS) is actively pursuing a court order to extend the detention of former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, amid serious allegations of terrorism financing and other related offenses.
Malami was re-arrested by DSS operatives on Monday, shortly after his release from Kuje Correctional Centre, where he had been remanded on separate corruption charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This development follows the discovery of arms and ammunition at his country home in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, during an EFCC search, which has prompted multiple petitions linking him to terrorism financing.
Security sources indicate that the DSS views the investigation as highly sensitive and complex, potentially spanning several months to fully unravel the allegations.
A source familiar with the probe revealed, “There are several issues he is being questioned on. Terrorism and terrorism financing are serious offenses. This is why we are working to get a court order today to detain him further.”
The former AGF, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023, along with his son Abdulaziz and wife Hajia Asabe Bashir, had previously been granted bail in the EFCC case but remains in custody pending the outcome of the DSS proceedings. The agency emphasizes that the probe is ongoing and aimed at ensuring national security.
The DSS urges the public to refrain from speculation and assures that due process will be followed in accordance with the law. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
