In a significant development amid the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, two more members of the House of Assembly have publicly urged their colleagues to halt the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
Hon. Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Hon. Emilia Amadi, representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made this appeal during a press conference held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the differences between the executive and legislative branches. They highlighted that continued conflict could harm the state's progress and unity.
"We appeal to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and explore alternatives to the impeachment proceedings," stated Hon. Nwakoh. Hon. Amadi added, "Dialogue remains the best path to reconciliation and constitutional restraint."
This move follows similar withdrawals by two other lawmakers earlier this week. On Monday, House Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Hon. Peter Abbey, representing Degema Constituency, also distanced themselves from the impeachment plot.
With these latest appeals, a total of four out of the 26 lawmakers who initially supported the notice of alleged gross misconduct have now advocated for a peaceful resolution.
The political crisis in Rivers State stems from disputes between Governor Fubara and allies of former Governor Nyesom Wike, leading to factional divisions within the Assembly. These recent developments signal growing internal resistance and a potential shift toward de-escalation.
The lawmakers expressed hope that their call would inspire broader unity and focus on governance for the benefit of Rivers State's residents.
