President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has vowed that his administration will establish state police forces to effectively curb insecurity and restore peace and stability nationwide.

Speaking at the high-profile interfaith Iftar gathering marking the commencement of the 2026 Ramadan season, the President emphasized that security forms the bedrock of national prosperity. “Security is the foundation of prosperity. Without it, farms cannot flourish, businesses cannot grow, and families cannot sleep in peace,” he stated.

President Tinubu described the move toward state policing as a practical and necessary step rather than a political gesture. “We will establish state police to curb insecurity. This is not about politics. It is about practicality.

It is about empowering states with the tools to protect their people while strengthening our national framework,” he affirmed.

The President assured citizens that his earlier pledges on security would be implemented without delay. “What I promised Nigerians will not be postponed. We will establish state police to combat insecurity,” he reiterated, urging collective resolve and unity in the fight against criminal elements including bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions and consensus among state governors through platforms such as the National Economic Council on the need to decentralize policing to better address local security challenges and close ungoverned spaces exploited by criminal groups.

President Tinubu also used the occasion to declare that Nigeria has emerged from periods of economic uncertainty and security headwinds, signaling brighter prospects ahead through sustained reforms and collaborative governance.

The establishment of state police would require constitutional amendments and legislative processes, building on prior committee reviews and stakeholder engagements initiated since 2024.

The Presidency reaffirmed its dedication to working closely with the National Assembly, state governments, security agencies, and all Nigerians to realize this transformative initiative for safer communities and a more secure federation.
