The Nollywood community and fans worldwide are in mourning following the death of renowned Yoruba film actress Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara. Aunty Ajara passed away overnight after a prolonged struggle with a liver-related illness, during which she was hospitalized and placed on oxygen support.
Reports indicate she was also pregnant at the time, adding to the heartbreak of her untimely departure. Aunty Ajara was a cherished figure in the Yoruba movie industry, celebrated for her comedic talent and memorable performances on the small screen.
Her vibrant presence and ability to bring joy to audiences made her a staple in Nollywood, where she built a loyal following through her roles that often highlighted humor and cultural narratives.
The news of her passing was confirmed by her elder brother, Ridwan Lasisi, in an emotional video message shared online. "Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on," he stated, expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from families, industry colleagues, and the public.
He also appealed for an end to financial contributions, noting that while they were appreciated during her treatment, they are no longer needed.
Nollywood director and producer Tobi Oladele, known as Tee Mony, shared a heartfelt statement on social media: "With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved actress, Aunty Ajara. She passed on overnight after a long and courageous battle with illness. During this difficult period, Ajara received immense love, prayers, contributions, encouragement, and compassion from the public."
In the weeks leading up to her death, colleagues including Ronke Oshodi-Oke, Wumi Toriola, Mide Martins, and Afeez Owo rallied the public for urgent financial assistance to cover her mounting medical expenses, as her condition deteriorated despite intensive care.
