The Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has demanded a comprehensive and impartial investigation following former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's open admission that he had access to intercepted phone conversations of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

In an interview broadcast on Arise Television on Friday, February 13, 2026, Mallam El-Rufai claimed he overheard directives from the NSA related to security operations, including references to his own situation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He further alleged that such interception enabled him to gain sensitive information.

Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga described the revelation as deeply troubling and a potential violation of national security laws and privacy protections.

"No one is above the law in Nigeria," Onanuga stated. "The claim by a former high-ranking public official that he engaged in or had access to the wire-tapping of the nation's chief security adviser is not only reckless but constitutes a serious breach that warrants immediate scrutiny. This should be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate punishment meted out where guilt is established."

The Presidency emphasized that intercepting communications without lawful authorization undermines the integrity of Nigeria's security apparatus and could expose sensitive operations to risk.

It reiterated the administration's commitment to the rule of law and the protection of all citizens' rights, including those in positions of authority. "This is not about political differences or personal rivalries," the statement continued.

"It is about safeguarding the institutions of state and ensuring accountability for any actions that threaten national security or violate established legal processes."

The Presidency urged relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to expedite inquiries into the matter, assuring the public that the investigation would be conducted transparently and without bias.

President Tinubu remains focused on delivering good governance, security, and economic reforms for all Nigerians, undeterred by distractions or unsubstantiated claims.
