In his remarks at the event titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” Obasanjo condemned those spreading misinformation, describing them as wasting their time. He asserted, “I dey kampe” (a Pidgin expression meaning he is strong, fit, and in good spirits), and expressed firm confidence in his continued longevity and health.

Obasanjo, born on March 5, 1937, emphasized his belief that God has purposefully kept him alive and reasonably healthy at 89 for a specific reason.

He stated that divine assurance has been given for more work on earth, along with the necessary strength to fulfill it. He further dismissed ill-wishers, noting that any desire for his early demise is contrary to God's plan and that such individuals will face divine judgment.

The former president used the occasion to reflect on leadership challenges in Africa and globally, drawing from his extensive experience as a military leader, two-term civilian president, and elder statesman. He urged authentic leadership defined by integrity and service rather than external perceptions.

The statement comes amid celebrations of his 89th birthday, which include humanitarian initiatives such as a large-scale free medical outreach organized by the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, providing healthcare to thousands in Lagos suburbs.

Obasanjo's defiant message has resonated widely, with tributes pouring in, including from President Bola Tinubu, who hailed the former leader's enduring "towering influence" on Nigeria, Africa, and the world.

The former president remains active in public discourse, nation-building efforts, and philanthropic work through his foundation.
