In response to heightened security risks in the Persian Gulf region, leading global shipping companies including Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd have announced the suspension of vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz and related Gulf operations.

The decisions follow recent military developments, including joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions by Tehran, which have dramatically increased threats to commercial maritime traffic. Iranian authorities have issued warnings restricting navigation, and reports indicate vessels are being advised to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas and other goods pass.

Key measures taken by the companies include, Maersk: Suspension of all vessel crossings through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, prioritizing the safety of crews, vessels, and cargo. The company is coordinating closely with security partners and warning of potential delays for services affecting Middle East ports.

MSC: Suspension of all bookings for worldwide cargo to the Middle East region until further notice, with vessels instructed to proceed to designated safe shelter areas.

CMA CGM: Instructions for all vessels currently in or bound for the Persian Gulf to immediately proceed to safe shelter. Certain Suez Canal transits have also been halted, with rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope implemented where necessary.

Hapag-Lloyd: Suspension of all vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice, citing the evolving security situation and official restrictions on the waterway. Services calling on Arabian Gulf ports may face delays, rerouting, or schedule adjustments.

Industry bodies such as BIMCO have highlighted elevated risks, including potential misidentification of vessels, disruption to tanker traffic, and targeted threats to ships with certain affiliations. Hundreds of vessels, including tankers, have reportedly dropped anchor or reversed course in adjacent waters as a precautionary measure.

These suspensions underscore the vulnerability of global supply chains to geopolitical tensions in this vital maritime corridor. Shipping companies emphasize that crew safety and the protection of international trade remain paramount, and operations will resume only when conditions allow for secure passage.

The situation continues to evolve rapidly, with ongoing monitoring by naval forces, maritime security organizations, and governments. Further updates will be provided as developments warrant.
