President Donald J. Trump today reiterated his position regarding the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Iran's participation in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In an exclusive interview with Politico, President Trump stated unequivocally: “I really don’t care” if Iran’s national team plays in the tournament. He added, “I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.”

The remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including recent U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran, which have raised significant questions about the Islamic Republic's ability and willingness to send its team to matches scheduled on U.S. soil. Iran's soccer federation president has publicly expressed doubt about participation, and the nation notably skipped a recent FIFA planning meeting in Atlanta.

President Trump emphasized that his focus remains on ensuring a safe, secure, and successful World Cup for all participating nations and fans.

The United States, as a primary host, is committed to delivering an exceptional global event from June 11 to July 19, 2026, showcasing the best of international football while prioritizing national security and the safety of American communities.

The President’s comments reflect his administration’s longstanding stance on Iran and underscore that sporting events will not alter U.S. policy priorities in the region.
