The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, marking a key leadership transition in the Nigeria Police Force.
The swearing-in followed the unanimous endorsement of Mr. Disu's appointment by the Nigeria Police Council during its meeting on Monday, March 2, 2026, presided over by President Tinubu. The Council, in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, ratified the nomination, paving the way for his confirmation as the 23rd IGP.
Mr. Disu, who had been serving in an acting capacity since late February 2026, succeeds the former IGP, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who resigned from office citing personal reasons. President Tinubu had earlier accepted Egbetokun's resignation and appointed Disu as Acting IGP, promoting him to the rank of Inspector-General upon assumption of the role.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu charged the new IGP to lead with professionalism, integrity, and unwavering dedication to duty. He emphasized the critical need to strengthen internal security, combat crime effectively, and restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force amid ongoing national security challenges.
IGP Olatunji Disu brings over three decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force. Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology.
His career highlights include key leadership positions such as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja; former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT); and most recently, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in IGP Disu's proven track record in intelligence, investigation, and operational leadership, noting that his appointment aligns with the administration's commitment to repositioning the police for greater efficiency, accountability, and results-oriented policing.
The President reaffirmed the Federal Government's resolve to provide the necessary support, resources, and reforms to enable the Nigeria Police Force to deliver on its mandate of protecting lives and property across the country.
IGP Disu, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to uphold the rule of law, promote community-oriented policing, enhance officer welfare, and intensify efforts against kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. He called for continued collaboration among security agencies, stakeholders, and citizens to achieve a safer Nigeria.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by members of the Federal Executive Council, senior government officials, top police hierarchy, and other dignitaries.
