Prominent economist, banker, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has issued a strong call for Nigeria’s opposition parties and leaders to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that failure to do so could lead to certain defeat and prolong the nation’s current challenges.
Hayatu-Deen, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and ex-Managing Director of FSB International Bank, emphasized that only a cohesive and credible opposition front can effectively tackle the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and threats to democratic governance facing Nigerians today.
“Division among opposition forces will only guarantee victory for the ruling party. Our strength lies in our unity. Nigerians are desperately seeking a credible alternative, and we must rise to that moment by putting personal ambitions aside for the greater good of the country,” Hayatu-Deen stated.
He highlighted the deepening insecurity across the country, the severe economic pressures on ordinary citizens including rising living costs and policy missteps and the urgent need to safeguard democratic institutions. According to him, these challenges require experienced, competent, and detribalised leadership that can reset Nigeria’s economy, restore security, and rebuild public confidence.
Hayatu-Deen recently joined the ADC after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the party as a viable platform for genuine change. His declaration as the first presidential aspirant under the ADC has added momentum to the emerging coalition, which already includes notable figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
He urged all opposition stakeholders within and outside the ADC to work towards a united front, stressing that fragmentation would weaken their collective ability to offer Nigerians a better alternative in 2027.
“Nigeria needs to chart a new course. This is not the Nigeria we deserve. It is time for experienced hands to steady the ship through pragmatic policies that deliver tangible results in security, economic stability, and inclusive growth,” he added.
Hayatu-Deen reaffirmed his commitment to a transparent and issue-based campaign focused on national recovery, unity, and sustainable development. He called on all well-meaning Nigerians, civil society groups, and political actors to support efforts towards building a strong, united opposition capable of winning the trust of the electorate.
The ADC is positioning itself as a formidable platform for opposition realignment, with party unity emerging as a critical factor for success in the next electoral cycle.
