A 63-year-old Lagos-based pastor, Chris Douglas, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja for the repeated rape of a church member’s daughter.

Justice Ramon Oshodi, presiding over the case, convicted Douglas on multiple counts of rape and handed him life imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.

The court heard that the pastor, who led a church in Lagos, exploited his position of trust to sexually assault the minor daughter of one of his congregants on several occasions.

Prosecutors from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice presented evidence establishing the offences beyond reasonable doubt.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Oshodi emphasised the gravity of the crime, particularly the betrayal of pastoral responsibility and the vulnerability of the victim. The judge noted that the sentence serves as a strong deterrent against sexual violence, especially within religious settings where trust is often abused.

The convict’s name is expected to be entered into the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register in line with state laws on sexual offences. Reacting to the judgment, the Lagos State Government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice stated: “This conviction underscores our commitment to protecting the vulnerable, particularly children and young girls, from predators who hide under the guise of spiritual authority. We will continue to prosecute such cases vigorously.”

The judgment has been welcomed by child rights advocates and women’s groups, who described it as a significant victory for justice and a warning to others in positions of authority.

The victim’s family expressed relief at the outcome, hoping the sentence will bring some closure and encourage other survivors to speak out.

This case adds to recent convictions of clerics involved in sexual offences in Lagos, reinforcing the message that no one is above the law.
