Nigeria and Türkiye have reached a significant bilateral agreement to establish a major military training facility in Nigeria, marking a new milestone in defence cooperation between the two nations. The partnership aims to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, enhance counterterrorism capabilities, and foster long-term military capacity building.

The agreement was concluded during high-level bilateral talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Retd.), and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum 2026 in Antalya, Türkiye. According to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Defence, both parties committed to creating a long-term “centre of excellence” for advanced military training in Nigeria.

Nigeria will provide land for the project, including a temporary training site in the short term and a suitable coastal location for the permanent infrastructure. The facility is expected to support training in areas such as counterterrorism, special operations, intelligence, modern warfare tactics, and related capabilities, while also facilitating broader defence industry collaboration, technology transfer, and joint exercises.

As an immediate step under the agreement, Nigeria will deploy 200 Special Forces personnel to Türkiye for specialised training, with the first batch scheduled to depart shortly after the Minister’s return. The partnership also includes plans for phased implementation, intelligence sharing, border security support, and potential cooperation on equipment and naval capabilities.

Minister Musa emphasised the strategic value of the collaboration, noting Türkiye’s extensive experience in counterterrorism and defence production. “We have a Special Forces training agreement. Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces trainees, so as soon as I return, we are sending them [to Türkiye] for training,” he stated. Joint military exercises between the two countries are also anticipated later in the year.

This defence pact builds on growing bilateral ties, with Nigeria seeking to leverage Turkish expertise to address evolving security challenges, including insurgency and other threats. Officials from both sides described the initiative as a practical framework for sustained cooperation in training, technology, and operational readiness.

The establishment of the training facility is expected to significantly boost the Nigerian Armed Forces’ capabilities and contribute to regional stability in West Africa.
