President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly escorted to safety by Secret Service agents Saturday evening after gunshots rang out at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET as the annual event was underway in the hotel's ballroom. Attendees reported hearing multiple shots, prompting chaos as guests ducked under tables and law enforcement responded rapidly. President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of the Cabinet who were in attendance were immediately evacuated from the stage and the venue.

No injuries were reported to the President, First Lady, or other protectees. One Secret Service officer was struck by gunfire but was protected by body armor and is expected to recover fully. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was apprehended at the scene after allegedly charging a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He was taken into custody without being shot and was later transported to Howard University Hospital.

Authorities described the incident as involving a lone individual who fired at security personnel outside the main ballroom. President Trump, speaking at a White House press conference later that evening while still in his tuxedo, praised the "very brave members of the Secret Service" for their swift action. He characterized the suspect as a "lone wolf" and noted that the gunman "hadn’t come anywhere close to breach the doors of the room."

"The Secret Service did an incredible job tonight," President Trump stated. "It's a dangerous profession being in the public eye, but we will never be intimidated."

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that the suspect will face federal charges, including using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer.

The White House Correspondents' Dinner, traditionally a night of speeches and celebrity appearances, was interrupted and did not resume. Guests and journalists were safely evacuated as law enforcement secured the perimeter.

President Trump expressed gratitude to law enforcement and reiterated his commitment to strong security measures. Investigations by the Secret Service, FBI, and local authorities are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident. The White House remains in close coordination with all relevant agencies.
