President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday welcomed former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to the State House, Aso Rock Villa, for high-level consultations focused on prevailing political developments across West Africa.

The closed-door meeting, which sources describe as part of recurring dialogue between the two leaders, underscores the Tinubu administration’s reliance on Jonathan’s seasoned diplomatic experience, particularly his role as a special envoy and mediator in sub-regional crises.

President Tinubu, who currently serves as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has been actively engaging with regional stakeholders to address political transitions, security challenges, and democratic backsliding in member states. Dr. Jonathan, a prominent figure in international peacebuilding, has led several ECOWAS and African Union observer missions and mediation efforts in countries such as Mali, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone.

While the presidency has not released a detailed readout of the discussions, insiders indicate that the agenda included the situation in Niger Republic, political recalibration in Senegal, and broader efforts to strengthen democratic governance in the region.

Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, a senior presidential aide described the consultation as “fruitful and forward-looking,” adding that “President Tinubu values Dr. Jonathan’s insights and continues to leverage his statesmanship in advancing peace and stability in West Africa.”

Dr. Jonathan, who departed the Villa after roughly an hour, made no formal statement to the press but was seen exchanging warm pleasantries with the President before his exit.

The meeting marks the latest in a series of strategic engagements by President Tinubu with former leaders and regional partners as his administration deepens its focus on West Africa’s geopolitical stability.
