Aisha Yesufu, a renowned Nigerian activist and social commentator, has announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). She has declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu made the announcement via a statement posted on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday. She attributed the move to a deeper understanding of the nation’s future and her unwavering commitment to supporting the political direction of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, His Excellency Peter Obi.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she stated.
Yesufu emphasized her consistency in honoring commitments, noting that her initial support for Peter Obi led her to the ADC, and her move to the NDC continues that pledge. “When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.
She further confirmed that she is not joining the NDC merely as a member but as a candidate: “This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat.”
In her statement, Yesufu expressed gratitude to the ADC for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at different levels. She described her transition as a “clean” one and thanked party members for their collaboration.
The defection forms part of a broader realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics, following recent moves by Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC.
Aisha Yesufu is widely recognized for her vocal advocacy on human rights, good governance, and accountability. She gained prominence during the #EndSARS protests and has remained a consistent voice for democratic values and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
