Hon. Desmond Oluwashola Elliot, actor-turned-politician and current member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency 1, has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the constituency.
In a statement issued today amid the ongoing primaries, Hon. Elliot expressed deep concern over the atmosphere of intimidation, coercion, and alleged manipulation that has characterized the process. He accused certain party leaders and local government officials of exerting undue pressure on delegates and supporters, including threats of withheld empowerment programs and victimization of those perceived to support his candidacy.
“In all zones, they have been intimidating and stopping us. I want to officially announce my withdrawal from this particular race,” Hon. Elliot stated. “My supporters have not been allowed access, and we have faced significant obstacles in ensuring a free and fair process.”
Hon. Elliot, who has served the constituency since 2015 and is currently in his third term, highlighted additional concerns including the withdrawal of his security aides and the dismissal of local government workers sympathetic to his bid. He emphasized his commitment to the APC while calling for justice, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles within the party.
“I have served my constituents with dedication for over a decade. However, the current environment does not allow for a credible primary. I stand for justice and fair play, and I urge party leaders to address these issues to strengthen our great party,” he added.
Hon. Elliot thanked his supporters for their unwavering loyalty and resilience throughout the process. He reaffirmed his dedication to public service and the development of Surulere, stating that he remains a committed member of the APC and will continue to contribute to the party’s success and the progress of Lagos State in other capacities.
