Acclaimed Nigerian actor and filmmaker Kanayo O. Kanayo used the platform of the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) to issue a passionate call against xenophobic violence in South Africa, urging Africans across the continent to unite and speak out against attacks on fellow Africans.

While accepting the Industry Merit Award on Saturday, May 9, 2026, the veteran thespian dedicated the honour to film practitioners across Africa. He reflected on the sacrifices of industry pioneers, many of whom have faced health challenges, returned to their villages, or passed on.

“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew,” Kanayo said in his acceptance speech. “Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on… Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices.”

He also extended appreciation to Canal+ for its continued support of the African entertainment industry, describing it as a unifying force. “I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa,” he added.

Turning to pressing continental issues, Kanayo did not shy away from addressing the rising xenophobic attacks in South Africa. “On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa,” he declared, drawing attention to the need for pan-African solidarity.

The powerful speech has sparked widespread conversations on social media and among entertainment stakeholders, highlighting the role of influential voices in addressing social and political challenges facing the continent.

Kanayo O. Kanayo, often celebrated for his impactful roles in Nollywood and his advocacy for the industry, continues to inspire generations of African creatives through his work both on and off the screen.
