Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has thrown his weight behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing the move as a reflection of the party’s commitment to fairness, power-sharing, and national unity.

Speaking at the NDC National Convention in Abuja on Saturday, Kwankwaso stated: “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so that the region can complete its eight years. This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

He further urged Nigerians and party supporters to actively participate in the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement comes shortly after the NDC formally adopted a resolution zoning the presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term. The motion was moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, and ratified by delegates at the convention.

Announcing the decision, NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, emphasised that the arrangement forms part of a broader power-sharing formula designed to balance regional interests. He added that the ticket will return to the North in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.

The zoning arrangement is widely seen as a boost for southern aspirants, particularly former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, who along with Kwankwaso, formally joined the NDC at the convention. Both leaders urged party members to avoid internal disputes and focus on national development and good governance.

Quote from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso: “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South... This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

Quote from NDC National Chairman, Moses Cleopas: “This power-sharing arrangement demonstrates our commitment to equity and fairness across the country. After the South’s tenure, it will be the turn of the North in 2031.”

The developments at the convention signal growing momentum within the opposition coalition as major political figures intensify efforts to present a formidable alternative ahead of the 2027 polls.
