Vehicular movement along the bustling Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja came to a complete standstill on Saturday as thousands of delegates, supporters, and political enthusiasts gathered for the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The massive turnout triggered severe traffic congestion that spilled over into adjoining roads and major intersections across the Central Business District, leaving many motorists stranded for several hours.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as enthusiastic crowds filled the area, with traders seizing road shoulders and open spaces to conduct brisk business amid the throng.

Supporters associated with the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient Movements were prominently visible, dancing, chanting solidarity songs, and jubilating around the convention venue. This outpouring of energy added to the vibrant yet challenging atmosphere, as guests and commuters navigated through the dense crowds.

Security operatives were promptly deployed to the area to manage the surging crowd, control traffic flow, and ensure order as political activities intensified at the convention ground.

The convention also marked a significant political development, with delegates unanimously adopting a resolution to zone the NDC’s 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The motion, moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, representing Ogbaru Constituency in Anambra State, is viewed as a strategic move that could reshape opposition politics ahead of the next general elections and bolster the prospects of southern aspirants, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

Quote from NDC Leadership (or Spokesperson): "The overwhelming turnout at today’s national convention demonstrates the growing strength and unity within the Nigeria Democratic Congress. We appreciate the resilience of Abuja residents and motorists affected by the traffic and thank security agencies for their swift intervention. This convention sets the stage for a stronger, more inclusive opposition ahead of 2027."

The NDC expressed gratitude to all delegates and supporters for their enthusiastic participation and reaffirmed its commitment to addressing national challenges through robust democratic engagement.
