Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has declared that Nigeria’s democracy is not the problem facing the country, but rather the failure of successive leaders to deliver good governance and uphold democratic principles.
Speaking at a recent public forum, Governor Otti emphasized the need to separate the democratic system from the shortcomings of those entrusted with leadership.
“Democracy has not failed Nigeria. Nigerian leaders have failed Nigeria,” Governor Otti stated. “The challenge is not with democracy as a system, but with leaders who have consistently placed self-interest above the collective good of the people.”
Governor Otti highlighted that true democracy requires accountability, transparency, competence, and a commitment to the welfare of citizens elements that have been lacking in much of Nigeria’s leadership over the years. He pointed to ongoing reforms in Abia State as a practical demonstration of what purposeful leadership can achieve.
The Governor called on Nigerians, especially the youth and critical stakeholders, to demand better leadership and actively participate in strengthening democratic institutions ahead of future elections. He expressed optimism that with the right leaders committed to service, Nigeria can unlock its full potential for economic growth, security, and sustainable development.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to people-centered governance, prudent management of resources, and delivery of tangible dividends of democracy to the people of Abia State and Nigeria at large.
