An Independent Investigative Panel set up by the Federal Government to probe alleged corruption and violations within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has disclosed that popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, was housed in a specially furnished soundproofed cell during his six-month prison term.
According to the panel’s findings, Bobrisky was accommodated in a private cell (Room A12) at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Lagos, which featured a soundproofed door distinct from other cells on the same floor. The panel noted that the purpose of the soundproofing remains unclear and called for further investigation into why the door was padded and what sounds or activities it was intended to shield.
The report further highlighted that Bobrisky enjoyed several extraordinary privileges, including access to mobile phones, frequent family and friend visitations, a humidifier, television, a refrigerator, and other amenities far beyond standard prison conditions. However, the panel found no evidence that he slept outside the custodial facility during his sentence.
The panel has recommended further investigations into whether these privileges were facilitated through corrupt practices by correctional officers. It also suggested the prosecution of social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) over related allegations.
The Federal Government is reviewing the full report and will take appropriate actions to address systemic issues in the correctional system, ensure accountability, and prevent future abuses of authority.
This revelation underscores the need for transparency and reforms in Nigeria’s prison management to uphold equality before the law.
