Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stating that there is no justifiable reason for his continued detention.

In a strongly worded statement, Mr. Obi argued that Kanu has not committed any offence that warrants his prolonged incarceration, describing the situation as an injustice that undermines Nigeria’s democratic values and the rule of law.

“There is no reason to detain Nnamdi Kanu. He did nothing wrong,” Obi declared. “The continued detention of Kanu is not only unlawful but also counterproductive to the peace and unity we all desire in our country. It is time for the government to do the right thing and set him free without further delay.”

Obi emphasized the need for the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and genuine nation-building over punitive measures. He noted that addressing the grievances of various regions through fair governance and inclusive policies remains the most effective path to lasting peace, rather than the detention of political voices.

The former Anambra State Governor urged the authorities to respect fundamental human rights and uphold the principles of justice, warning that prolonged detention without clear legal justification only deepens divisions and erodes public trust in the judicial system.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. True leadership demands courage to right wrongs and heal wounds. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is a necessary step towards genuine national healing and unity. He has done nothing to deserve this treatment.”

This position has sparked discussions among political observers, civil society groups, and Southeast leaders, many of whom have echoed calls for Kanu’s release.
