Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, has accused sections of the Nigerian media of deliberately amplifying and fabricating a narrative of worsening insecurity to undermine the achievements of the current administration.
In a recent statement, Onanuga emphasized that while security challenges persist in parts of the country, the government has recorded significant successes in tackling banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. He argued that certain media outlets and commentators are exaggerating isolated incidents and ignoring progress on the ground.
“The Nigerian media is creating a false narrative of insecurity,” Onanuga stated. “This administration has invested heavily in modernizing our security architecture, equipping our forces, and fostering intelligence-led operations that have led to the neutralization of key terror leaders and the rescue of hostages. Yet, some prefer to focus on sensationalism rather than the facts.”
He highlighted key government initiatives, including enhanced military operations in the North East and North West, improved coordination between security agencies, and community-based peace efforts that have restored relative calm in previously volatile areas. Onanuga noted that Nigeria is not under siege, contrary to some portrayals, and that economic and developmental programs are proceeding alongside security stabilization.
The Presidential Aide urged media practitioners to embrace responsible journalism, verify information, and contribute constructively to nation-building instead of peddling narratives that could discourage investment and erode public confidence.
“President Tinubu remains committed to the security and prosperity of all Nigerians,” Onanuga added. “We call on the media to partner with us in highlighting solutions and celebrating victories in the fight against insecurity, rather than manufacturing crises for clicks and political points.”
The Presidency reiterated its dedication to transparency and continues to work tirelessly with all stakeholders to ensure peace and stability across the federation.
