Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued a powerful call to action for African nations to unite and present a common front in shaping digital policies and telecommunications regulations, warning that a coordinated continental approach is critical for Africa’s digital sovereignty, innovation, and economic competitiveness.
Speaking at a major African telecommunications gathering in Abuja, the Vice President emphasised that fragmented policies weaken the continent’s leverage in global digital governance. He urged ATU member states and African institutions to harmonise strategies ahead of key international platforms like the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference.
“Africa must speak with one voice on digital policies and telecoms,” Vice President Shettima declared. “Only through unity can we influence global standards, protect our digital economy, and ensure technology works for African interests and values.”
He spotlighted Nigeria’s strides under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in building robust digital infrastructure, data governance, and policy frameworks positioning the country as a driving force in Africa’s digital transformation. The Vice President described forums like the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries as vital for aligning on spectrum management, data protection, cross-border connectivity, and emerging technologies.
Vice President Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to championing continental initiatives that promote evidence-based regulation, knowledge exchange, and stronger collective bargaining in global digital talks.
He concluded that this unified approach will help Africa shift from a mere consumer of technology to a creator and exporter of digital solutions unlocking inclusive growth and sustainable development for the continent.
