The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone, has issued a strong warning that it will support the shutdown of three Lagos State-owned universities if the Lagos State Government fails to immediately implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.

The affected institutions are the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).

Speaking at a press conference held today at LASUSTECH, ASUU representatives expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state government’s refusal to honour the agreement signed six months ago, despite repeated engagements and appeals. The union accused the government of neglecting the welfare of lecturers and undermining the stability of the education sector.

“We care for our students, but we will not sit idly by while our members continue to suffer. The Lagos State Government must be held responsible for any industrial crisis that arises from its failure to implement the agreement,” the union stated.

Key issues highlighted include the non-payment of agreed salary increments, academic allowances, and the resolution of other welfare related matters contained in the 2025 Agreement. ASUU also raised concerns over unresolved internal disputes at LASU and LASUED, including the dismissal of union officials.

The union emphasized that while several federal universities and some state institutions nationwide have fully implemented the agreement, Lagos State has lagged behind. ASUU declared its full readiness to back any decisive action taken by its branches in the three universities to compel the government to act.

ASUU urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and relevant authorities to urgently address the matter to avert another round of industrial unrest that could disrupt academic activities and affect thousands of students. The union warned that it remains committed to the welfare of its members and the overall improvement of the university system.fbc555
