Zamfara State Governor, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has issued an immediate ban on all forms of farming in cemeteries across the state, declaring that burial grounds must be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

The Governor made the announcement during an inspection visit to a cemetery in Gusau, emphasizing that cemeteries are sacred public spaces meant to preserve the memory and dignity of the deceased.

“Cemeteries are sacred. They are not farmlands. Using burial grounds for agricultural purposes disrespects both our cultural and religious values,” Governor Lawal stated.

He directed that the ban takes immediate effect across all 14 local government areas of the state. Any crops already planted in cemeteries are to be cleared without delay, and violators will face appropriate sanctions.

The decision aims to restore the sanctity of burial sites, which have reportedly been turned into farmlands in some communities, a practice the Governor described as unacceptable and no longer tolerable.

Governor Lawal called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local government authorities to sensitize residents on the importance of preserving cemeteries and to ensure strict compliance with the directive. He also urged the public to report any violations to the relevant authorities.

This measure forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to uphold cultural heritage, promote public decency, and maintain order in communal spaces.
