FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly criticised detractors of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accusing them of “spreading hate and false rumours” while defending the tournament as a resounding success marked by joy, unity and safety.
In a lengthy open letter published on Instagram on Monday and shared via FIFA’s official channels, Infantino addressed critics who, he said, were “so consumed by hate and criticism” that they missed the celebration experienced by millions of fans across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“To those behind their pens and papers, behind their screens spreading hate and false rumours, I want to say that while you are sitting behind, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard, and delivering the best show in the world,” Infantino wrote. “We experienced no violence, no incidents, 100% safety and security, only joy and happiness!”
The 2026 World Cup, the largest in history with 48 teams and staged across three host nations, concluded with Spain as champions. Infantino highlighted the presence of families, children and supporters from around the globe, describing the event as a demonstration of togetherness that transcended politics and division.
He also referenced FIFA’s efforts to facilitate the participation of teams such as Iran, stating that the organisation “worked tirelessly to unite two countries at war” and that the Iranian team entered the United States without conflict.
Infantino urged critics to “take a moment to reflect, meditate, pray” and concluded by emphasising football’s unifying power: “Our world needs love, not hate; tolerance, not division; and celebration, not mourning. May football rise above all hate.”
The statement comes amid ongoing debate over various aspects of the tournament, including visa restrictions, disciplinary decisions and organisational challenges. Infantino maintained that the event delivered “the most outstanding FIFA World Cup” and invited detractors to focus on the positive experiences shared by fans worldwide.
