Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has dismissed suggestions that he entered into any agreement to serve only one term if elected governor.
Responding to questions during an interview, Hamzat stated emphatically: “No. There is no such agreement.”
The deputy governor, who has served alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu since 2019, used the opportunity to outline his vision for the state and reaffirm his readiness to continue the developmental trajectory of the current administration under the THEMES Plus agenda.
Hamzat described the role of a governor as that of a team captain whose primary responsibility is to align expertise with a clear vision and ensure that every policy and project improves the quality of life of Lagosians. He noted that government is a continuum and that the current administration’s focus is to finish strong, complete ongoing projects, and hand over a solid foundation to the next government.
On his manifesto, Hamzat disclosed that the document spans approximately 537 pages and is currently being refined through consultations with market women, transport workers, professionals, and other stakeholders. Priority areas include expanding access to running water for 60 per cent of residents within the first two years, strengthening security through technology and support for state police, improving organisation and decentralised governance, and tackling flooding and waste management.
He emphasised that Lagos cannot afford trial-and-error leadership, stressing the need for experience, competence, and a deep understanding of the state’s unique challenges.
Hamzat also addressed concerns about discipline and strict enforcement of rules, noting that sustainable development requires order, respect for the rule of law, and collective commitment to the common good. He maintained that difficult decisions, when necessary, must always serve the greater public interest while carrying as many stakeholders along as possible through consensus-building rather than confrontation.
Reiterating his long-standing working relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat described their partnership as one built on years of friendship and mutual respect, expressing confidence that the transition would be smooth and free of the predecessor-successor conflicts seen in some other states.
He further pledged to prioritise security, infrastructure, economic development, and an improved quality of life for all residents if elected in 2027.
