Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed surprise at the continued existence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he was unaware the opposition party was still active in Nigerian politics.

Akpabio made the remark while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of the newly constructed Akinwumi Ajibola Street in Gaduwa District, Abuja. He was reacting to the recent by-election victory of Senator Olaka Nwogu of the PDP in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District.

“I didn’t know there was still PDP. I am sure he is somewhere, and so many other distinguished senators, members of the working committee of the people of the APC,” Akpabio said, while acknowledging dignitaries at the event.

He further urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to stop “confusing” the public, adding: “Wike, stop confusing us. If a party has died, allow it to die.”

The Senate President’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments and internal dynamics within the PDP, as Wike continues to serve in the APC-led federal government.

Despite the light-hearted jab at the opposition, Akpabio praised Wike’s performance as FCT Minister, describing his infrastructural achievements as “miracles” that have transformed Abuja and made previous administrations appear ineffective.

The event also highlighted the completion of key infrastructure projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including roads, drainage systems, and street lighting.
