K Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, one of Brazil’s most iconic and celebrated footballers, has announced his retirement from international duty with the Brazilian national team following Brazil’s Round of 16 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an emotional moment after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway on July 5, the 34-year-old forward addressed the media and fans, stating: “I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here; I finished here.” Neymar scored a late penalty in the match, adding to his legacy as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 80 goals in approximately 130 appearances.

Neymar made his senior international debut for Brazil in 2010 at the same venue, MetLife Stadium, against the United States. Over a remarkable 16-year career with the Seleção, he became the nation’s second-most capped player and delivered unforgettable performances, including key roles in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup victory (where he earned the Golden Ball), the 2016 Olympic gold medal as captain, and reaching the 2021 Copa América final.

Widely regarded for his dazzling dribbling, creativity, and flair, Neymar surpassed Pelé’s long-standing goalscoring record for Brazil in 2023. He appeared in four FIFA World Cups (2014–2026) and leaves the international stage as one of the most talented players of his generation.

“Neymar brought joy and magic to football fans around the world,” said a spokesperson for the Brazilian Football Confederation. “His contributions to the national team and his record as Brazil’s top scorer will be remembered forever. We thank him for his dedication and brilliance on the pitch.”

Neymar is expected to continue his club career with Santos FC in Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
