The Nigerian government and the family of Miss Nani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old brilliant medical student, are deeply saddened to announce her untimely and tragic death following a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Nani, who was just days away from completing her medical programme and graduating as a doctor, was killed when the area where she resided came under attack. Her death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian student community in Ukraine and across the country, cutting short the life of a promising young Nigerian who had dedicated herself to the noble profession of healing.

Nani Adaobi Marian was known among her peers and lecturers for her exceptional academic performance, compassion, and resilience. She had overcome numerous challenges to pursue her dream of becoming a medical doctor, with plans to return to Nigeria to contribute to the nation’s healthcare system. Her passing represents a profound loss not only to her family but also to the medical profession and the country at large.

The Nigerian Embassy in Ukraine and relevant authorities are working closely with Ukrainian officials to ensure the safe repatriation of her remains and to provide full support to her grieving family.

Dr. (Mrs.) Nkechi Nnaji, a family spokesperson, said: “Nani was a light in our lives  intelligent, kind-hearted, and full of potential. She worked so hard to reach this final stage of her studies. We are heartbroken that her life was taken so suddenly in this senseless conflict. We pray for justice and for comfort for all who loved her.”

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its condolences to the family and reiterated its call for the protection of Nigerian nationals abroad, particularly students in conflict zones. The Ministry is advising all Nigerian students in Ukraine to remain vigilant, adhere to safety advisories, and consider options for relocation where necessary.

Nigeria stands in solidarity with the family of Miss Nani Adaobi Marian during this difficult time and will continue to monitor developments surrounding this incident.
