Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Engineer Seyi Makinde, has called on the party’s newly elected leadership to work closely with other opposition parties to present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Makinde made the call on Thursday while addressing delegates at the APM National Convention held at the Dr Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi.
He stressed that the presence of a strong and credible opposition is essential for the survival and deepening of democracy in Nigeria. According to him, the task before opposition leaders transcends merely winning elections; it is about offering Nigerians a genuine choice about the future of their country.
“The task before all of us is bigger than winning an election. It is to give Nigerians a real choice about the future of their country,” Makinde said.
He further stated: “As I said, the presence of a credible opposition is what sustains democracy. So, our new leaders must be ready to work with other opposition parties to ensure that we give Nigeria an incredible alternative in the 2027 general election.”
Makinde observed that the APC administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians, underscoring the need for a united opposition front capable of delivering meaningful change.
The convention also saw the re-election of Yusuf Mamman Dantalle as National Chairman of the APM and the installation of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as the party’s National Leader. Mohammed expressed confidence in the Makinde ticket and described the Oyo governor as the best presidential candidate for Nigeria.
The APM has been intensifying efforts to build cross-party alliances and broaden its support base ahead of the 2027 polls.
