The family of celebrated Nigerian actor, film executive, and cultural icon Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has announced his passing. He died on September 16, 2026, at the age of 84.
In a statement shared by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, the family expressed gratitude for a life well lived. “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Born on July 11, 1942, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to parents of Egba Alake origin, Olu Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He built a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, beginning with British television appearances in the 1970s (including series such as ‘The Goodies,’ ‘The Professionals,’ and ‘The Tomorrow People’) and international films before becoming one of the defining figures of Nollywood.
Known for his commanding presence, deep baritone voice, and authoritative portrayals of kings, chiefs, and leaders, Jacobs appeared in more than 100 Nigerian films. He co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, fellow veteran actress Joke Silva (married since 1989), encompassing film production, distribution, and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, which has trained generations of performers.
Among his many honours, Jacobs received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) national honour in 2011, and the AMVCA Industry Merit Award in 2013. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential African actors of his generation.
Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children (including sons Olusoji and Olugbenga), and grandchildren. The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
