In a tragic turn of events, the death toll from severe flooding and landslides in Nepal has risen to at least 193, following intense rainfall over the weekend. The catastrophic weather has led to widespread devastation across the country, particularly affecting the capital city, Kathmandu.

Authorities confirmed that 31 individuals remain unaccounted for, while approximately 96 others have sustained injuries. The flooding was exacerbated by a landslide that struck a traffic jam on a highway leading into Kathmandu, burying three buses and resulting in the loss of around 30 lives. Many victims were asleep when the disaster occurred.

The heavy rains, which began on September 27, have caused significant disruptions throughout the region. Key highways remain blocked due to landslides, isolating Kathmandu and hindering rescue operations. As of now, efforts are underway to clear debris and restore access to affected areas. The government has mobilized police and military personnel to assist in these critical recovery operations.

In response to the crisis, the government has declared a three-day closure of all schools and colleges nationwide. Authorities are urging residents to avoid nonessential travel and have imposed restrictions on nighttime bus operations in the Kathmandu Valley.

While weather conditions have improved slightly, officials warn that additional rainfall could trigger further flooding and landslides. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology is closely monitoring the situation and may issue new alerts as necessary.

The ongoing recovery efforts are focused on providing aid to those affected and restoring essential services disrupted by the flooding. Local health authorities are also on high alert for potential disease outbreaks linked to stagnant floodwaters.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and urge everyone to remain vigilant as recovery efforts continue.
