Manchester United Head Coach Ruben Amorim has publicly apologized to fans following the club’s stunning defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils were eliminated after a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout loss, following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Grimsby took an early 2-0 lead, capitalizing on United’s lackluster start. Despite a spirited comeback with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, United failed to convert the decisive penalty, with Mbeumo’s final attempt ricocheting off the crossbar.
In a post-match interview, Amorim expressed deep regret and acknowledged the team’s shortcomings: “I just want to apologise to our fans,” Amorim said. “The way we started the game without any intensity—we were completely lost. I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today. Something has to change, and you’re not going to change 22 players again.”
The defeat marks a new low in Amorim’s tenure, raising questions about the squad’s mentality and preparedness. With only one point from two Premier League matches this season, the pressure is mounting on the Portuguese manager to deliver results and restore confidence.
Amorim added: “Grimsby deserved it. The best team won today. We have a lot of debts with our fans, and we must focus on repaying them in the next match.”
Manchester United will now turn their attention to the upcoming fixture against Burnley, with hopes of bouncing back and salvaging their campaign.
