In a momentous declaration that has electrified the nation, President Santiago Peña has officially announced a national public holiday to commemorate Paraguay’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—their first appearance on football’s grandest stage in 16 years.

Following a dramatic 0-0 draw against Ecuador at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción, Paraguay clinched the final automatic qualifying spot for South America, sparking jubilant scenes across the country. Streets were flooded with red and white as thousands of fans waved flags, sang national anthems, and lit fireworks in celebration.

“There are kids who have never seen La Albirroja in a World Cup. There are Paraguayans who have waited a lifetime to experience this moment again,” said President Peña. “This is a dream come true for all Paraguayans, and that’s why tomorrow is a holiday—so we can all celebrate together!”

Under the leadership of coach Gustavo Alfaro, Paraguay transformed from near elimination to continental contenders. Alfaro’s squad stunned giants like Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, earning five wins and five draws in their last 11 qualifiers. “I don’t want to go to the World Cup just to participate,” Alfaro stated. “I want to compete for the maximum.”

Paraguay’s qualification marks their ninth World Cup appearance, with their last being in South Africa 2010, where they reached the quarter-finals. The 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, promises to be a defining chapter in Paraguay’s football legacy.
