The Benue State House of Assembly has been rocked by a seismic political shift following the dramatic resignation and subsequent suspension of Speaker Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh. The move comes in the wake of explosive revelations surrounding a reported ₦117 billion scandal allegedly linked to Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.
According to sources within the Assembly, Speaker Dajoh had spearheaded an internal investigation that unearthed 42 damning allegations against the Governor, ranging from financial mismanagement and abuse of office to unconstitutional interference in governance and procurement irregularities.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the Assembly’s response was swift and politically charged. Speaker Dajoh tendered his resignation on August 24, 2025, citing “good faith and the best interest of the state”. Days later, the Assembly imposed a three-month suspension on him, accusing him of plotting to impeach Governor Alia—a claim that has further deepened the political divide.
In a statement released by the Governor’s office, Alia denied any involvement in the Speaker’s removal and reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law and legislative independence.
The new Speaker, Hon. Alfred Berger, has since reversed several of Dajoh’s decisions, including the confirmation of previously rejected commissioner nominees and the reinstatement of suspended government officials, signaling a realignment of legislative-executive relations.
