In a shocking incident that has raised alarms over the security of highways in Nigeria, gunmen disguised in military uniforms ambushed and killed a Nigerian soldier at a checkpoint in Edo State.

The victim, identified as Corporal Irabo, was traveling back to his unit in Abuja after the expiration of his leave pass when the attack occurred on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, along a major highway in Edo State.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, posing as legitimate military personnel, stopped the public transport vehicle carrying the corporal and ordered all passengers to identify themselves. Upon revealing his identity as a serving soldier, Corporal Irabo was immediately shot at close range and died on the spot. The gunmen fled the scene shortly after, leaving behind a scene of panic and confusion.

This tragic event underscores the growing threat posed by criminal elements exploiting military uniforms to set up fake checkpoints and carry out attacks on unsuspecting travelers. No other passengers were reported injured in the incident, but the loss of Corporal Irabo has sent shockwaves through the military community and local residents.

As of the time of this release, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Edo State Police Command has issued an official statement on the matter. Investigations are expected to commence promptly to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, with calls for enhanced vigilance and measures to curb the proliferation of counterfeit military attire.

The Nigerian Army remains committed to protecting the nation and its citizens, and urges the public to report any suspicious activities at checkpoints or along highways to the nearest authorities.
