The Rivers State Police Command wishes to address recent reports circulating on social media and various news platforms regarding the alleged dismissal of officers involved in the assault of Mr. Cletus Emmanuel Onyekachi and two others along Igbo-Etche Road, Port Harcourt.
Contrary to claims that the implicated officers have been sacked, the Command confirms that no dismissal has occurred at this time. The officers in question, members of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, are currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures in accordance with established protocols of the Nigeria Police Force.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated in a video briefing: “We have not dismissed those officers. Disciplinary actions have been initiated, but the reports of their dismissal are false. We follow due process in handling misconduct within the Force.”
The incident, which sparked national outrage following the release of disturbing video footage, involved the alleged demand of a ₦1 million bribe for a tinted glass permit. When the victims refused, they were reportedly subjected to physical assault, including slaps, flogging, and other forms of brutality.
Mr. Onyekachi, in a video statement, recounted the ordeal: “One of them told me straight that I should ‘bring one meter’ (₦1million) for the tinted permit. I thought he was joking until he made it clear that he was serious.”
The Rivers State Police Command reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice. The officers involved have been identified and summoned to Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary review by the Force Headquarters.
