In a landmark move to modernize public transportation and reduce carbon emissions, the Government of Abia State has announced the imminent launch of its electric bus service. The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Alex Otti, will see the deployment of 20 electric buses across key urban centers including Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia before the year concludes.
The first phase of the rollout includes the installation of 10 charging stations, each equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities, ensuring that the new transport system is inclusive and future-ready. A second batch of 20 additional buses and expanded infrastructure is scheduled for early 2026, reinforcing the state’s commitment to long-term sustainability.
“This is more than a transportation upgrade—it’s a transformation of how we move, live, and breathe in Abia,” said Governor Otti. “We are investing in clean energy, accessibility, and modern infrastructure to improve the quality of life for our people and set a new standard for public service.”
The electric bus initiative is part of a broader strategy to revamp Abia’s transit ecosystem, which includes the construction of modern bus terminals and the integration of smart mobility solutions. The government aims to deploy 100 electric buses in total, creating a robust network that connects communities efficiently and safely.
Environmental experts and urban planners have lauded the move, citing its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower operational costs, and stimulate green jobs in the region. The project also aligns with Nigeria’s national goals for climate action and sustainable development.
As the countdown begins, residents of Abia can look forward to quieter streets, cleaner air, and a more dignified commuting experience. The electric bus service is not just a technological upgrade—it’s a promise of progress.
