Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a firm declaration that the Nigerian Senate will not be held hostage by any individual member, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to discipline, democratic values, and the rule of law. This statement comes in response to recent developments surrounding the return of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) following a six-month suspension.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio emphasized that the Senate remains a resilient institution that must be respected by all its members. “The Senate cannot and will not be held hostage by the disruptive instincts of any of its members,” Akpabio stated. “Democracy thrives only when its institutions are respected and its rules upheld.”

The Senate President’s remarks were part of a broader reflection titled “The Trials and Triumphs of a Resilient Nigeria’s 10th Senate”, which highlighted the chamber’s recent challenges and its unwavering commitment to legislative integrity. While Akpabio did not name any specific lawmakers, his comments follow heightened tensions and speculation about internal divisions within the Senate.

In a show of solidarity, the Senate recently passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio’s leadership, signaling strong institutional support amid rumors of impeachment plots and political maneuvering. This vote underscores the Senate’s resolve to maintain unity and uphold its constitutional mandate.
