Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his readiness to step aside for a younger aspirant should they emerge victorious in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku emphasized his commitment to democratic principles and youth inclusion in governance. “If a younger candidate wins the ADC presidential ticket through a transparent and competitive process, I will not hesitate to support them,” he said.
Atiku clarified that his interest in the 2027 race is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to offer Nigerians a credible alternative. He stressed that the future of Nigeria depends on empowering younger leaders who are capable of driving innovation and reform.
His statement comes amid growing calls for generational change in Nigerian politics, with youth-led movements and civil society groups advocating for broader participation and leadership renewal.
Atiku’s media team later issued a statement reinforcing his position: “The former Vice President believes in the power of ideas and merit. If a younger aspirant emerges through the ADC’s democratic process, he will support them wholeheartedly.”
