The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, effective from midnight, Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The decision was reached after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held overnight, concluding in the early hours of Wednesday.
ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, addressed the press in Abuja, stating that the union’s decision was based on “useful engagements” with government representatives and interventions by the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education, TETFund, and Labour.
“We have decided to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the government’s renewed commitment to resolving our demands,” said Prof. Piwuna.
The strike, which began on October 13, was initiated in response to what ASUU described as “persistent neglect and insincerity” in addressing long-standing issues outlined in the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
ASUU has given the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and implement concrete solutions to the union’s demands.
