In a dramatic political shift, all members of the Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), abandoning their former affiliations with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
The announcement was made during Thursday’s plenary session by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read the lawmakers’ letters of resignation from their previous parties. The defection was witnessed by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, signaling a unified front between state and federal representatives.
The lawmakers cited “unresolved internal crises” within their former parties as the primary reason for their defection, stating that the instability threatened their ability to effectively represent their constituents. They also expressed support for Governor Mbah’s project-focused governance model, which they believe aligns with the APC’s national development agenda.
Following the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party had secured seven of Enugu’s eight House seats, while the PDP held one. With Thursday’s move, the APC now holds complete control of the Enugu caucus in the Green Chamber.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji said, “This decision was made in the interest of our people. We believe that aligning with the APC will enable us to deliver better results and support the governor’s transformative vision for Enugu State.”
