The Niger State Government has taken decisive humanitarian action following the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, in the Essa community along the Bida–Badegi–Agaie road. The explosion, which claimed dozens of lives and left many injured, was triggered when fire engulfed residents attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker.
During a condolence visit to the affected community, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced financial relief measures to support the victims and their families. Each bereaved family will receive ₦1 million, while ₦500,000 will be provided to each injured survivor currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Bida and Abuja.
“This is a moment of profound grief for Niger State,” Governor Bago stated. “We mourn with the families and assure them that the government stands firmly by their side. These funds are a token of our commitment to easing their burden and helping them rebuild.”
The Governor also condemned the dangerous practice of fuel scooping from fallen tankers, calling it both “criminal and life-threatening.” He urged residents to prioritize safety and report such incidents to authorities rather than risking their lives.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Bologi Ibrahim, emphasized that the government will continue to assess the situation and provide necessary support. Emergency response teams have been mobilized, and further safety sensitization campaigns are being planned to prevent future occurrences.
The Niger State Emergency Management Authority (NSEMA) confirmed that at least 39 people lost their lives, with over 60 others injured in the explosion.
