The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the conclusion of Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra’s five-year tenure as Chairman of the Commission. In a formal handover ceremony held on October 28, 2025, Kwarra transferred leadership responsibilities to Hon. Muhammad Usman Dattijo, Federal Commissioner representing Niger State, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the swearing-in of a new appointee.

Kwarra, who was appointed in 2020, is credited with steering the Commission through a transformative period, including the groundwork for Nigeria’s long-anticipated national census. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize population data systems, enhance demographic research, and improve institutional transparency.

In his farewell remarks, Kwarra expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people for the opportunity to serve. “It has been an honor to lead the NPC during a pivotal time in our nation’s demographic journey. I am confident that the Commission will continue to thrive under new leadership,” he said.

Hon. Muhammad Usman Dattijo, the incoming Acting Chairman, pledged to uphold the Commission’s mandate and ensure a smooth transition. “We will continue to build on the solid foundation laid by Hon. Kwarra and remain committed to delivering accurate and credible population data for national planning,” Dattijo stated.

President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Hon. Aminu Yusuf as the substantive Chairman of the NPC. Yusuf’s swearing-in is expected in the coming days, signaling a new chapter for the Commission as it prepares for the next phase of its strategic initiatives.
