Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that two people were killed and three others seriously injured in a violent attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, on Thursday morning. The incident occurred as worshippers gathered to observe Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

According to police reports, the assailant drove a vehicle into pedestrians before launching a knife attack. Armed officers responded swiftly, shooting the suspect, who is believed to be deceased. Due to suspicious items found on his person, bomb disposal units were deployed to ensure public safety.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as “horrific,” emphasizing the gravity of the incident given its timing. “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur makes it all the more horrific,” Starmer said, adding that additional police resources have been deployed to synagogues nationwide to protect the Jewish community.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed their sorrow, stating they were “deeply shocked and saddened” by the events. Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham praised the rapid response of law enforcement and urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
